This iteration of the Map Tracing Series was inspired by the disastrous coal ash spills that have taken place in the south-eastern United States in recent years. These are incidents where the failure of holding ponds meant to contain a toxic by-product of coal processing cause massive pollution events. The sludge spills have a lasting and harmful effect on hundreds of residents and vast river ecosystems. These spills are often the result of lax regulations and insufficient inspections. The forms are derived from the outlines of areas where use of the river for recreation or drinking water was prohibited.
